Composition

Do you have musical ideas that you would love to turn into polished pieces of music?

Do you have songs that you would like to perform or have someone else perform but they need a bit of tweaking?

Perhaps you have absolutely no clue about composing but would love to give it a go?!

I would love to work with you!

With 10 years of tertiary music composition study under my belt, 3 years of teaching at the University of Sydney and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and an array of experience working with soloists, small chamber ensembles, choirs and orchestras, I have the skills, knowledge and passion to help you get your ideas out of your head and onto the page in a fun and professional way.

Lessons with me are suitable for both total beginners and advanced students. I will guide you in developing the technical craft of your practice, awaken your ears and mind to new sounds and concepts, offer constructive feedback on your work and most importantly, nurture your innate musical voice.

How it works?

My lessons take place either over Skype or in person in my studio in Lewisham. If online, we will “screen-share” and look over your work together in real-time. I would ask you to send me your ideas a couple of days in advance and during the lesson we would explore what you have created and plan the next steps.

The lesson duration is 1 hour and the cost is $80.

If you have any questions or would like to get in touch to book a lesson, please send me a message via the contact page.

Music Theory & Aural Skills

With the growing number of research studies demonstrating the positive effects of music on our mental and physical wellbeing, it’s no wonder that so many people are flocking to choirs and orchestras to feed the soul and nourish the mind! But what if you can't read music, have no idea what a “major” or “minor” chord is, or feel like you have forgotten everything you perhaps once learnt as a child and are too embarrassed to participate? I can help you learn the skills you need to participate in the wonderful world of music!

Music theory is the study of the language of music. When we study music theory we look at all elements that comprise it - pitch, rhythm, structure, and so on. Once we understand how these elements come together to create meaning, a whole new level of appreciation for and involvement with music awakens.

Aural skills is the study of the way music sounds and “feels”. When we study aural skills we learn to identify and discuss (by listening alone) whether music is in a particular key, how the rhythms are functioning, what instruments are playing and so on. Eventually we are able to notate (write down in a musical way) exactly what we hear, as well as bring to life the music on the page before us.

Lessons with me are suitable for both total beginners and advanced students. I will guide you in developing an understanding of the foundations of music to allow you to engage with the music around you on a deeper level.

Workshops

What students have to say

I am incredibly passionate about guiding young people through music and have had wonderful experiences running small to large composition workshops for choristers and composers.

If you are a teacher or event organiser wishing to inspire your students with stories from a real, living composer, perhaps you may consider me for your event : )

What I offer is an engaging theoretical and aural exploration of music, detailed, constructive and, most importantly, encouraging feedback on your students’ work, and a very honest and inspiring conversation of what the life of a composer really looks like.

If you have any questions or would like to get in touch to book a workshop, please send me a message via the contact page.
